While western medicine relies heavily on conventional or modern medicine, the Chinese have their own traditional ways of treatment and medical approach. Western medicine relies on what is called linear thinking that of cause and effect system. The Chinese though are concerned with the whole system of your body specifically the flow of energy and its balance.

Acupuncture is a Chinese approach towards optimizing energy flow of the body and making sure the yin and yang are balanced. The yin and yang are believed by the Chinese to be the forces that govern all aspects in life and health included. The imbalance of these two forces is said to result to illnesses and bad health. Causing this imbalance is the blockage of the flow of energy in the body.

Acupuncture addresses this blockage with the use of fine needles inserted on specific points along meridians or energy lines of the body. This process stimulates energy flow and keeps the yin and yang balanced. This state of a balanced energy flow is believed to be the optimum condition wherein the body starts to heal itself naturally.

And while the Western belief before was very strong in terms of looking for scientific evidence and data to prove medical claims little by little alternative approaches as acupuncture is making its way into the mainstream. Many are starting to accept acupuncture and recognize its health benefits.

Acupuncture is believed to improve blood circulation, relieve pain and release endorphin hormones. Also, it is believed to cure certain allergic reactions, arthritic conditions, headaches, backaches and the like. There are many more illnesses that can be listed - that have been shown to be addressed by the acupuncture approach. Such also includes migraines, sinusitis, tennis elbow, asthma and infertility.

Just by looking at stroke victims or those fighting addiction and seeing them use acupuncture as part of their approach towards better health one can witness how acupuncture has convinced skeptics of its effectiveness. Surely, acupuncture has made believers of people who have doubts at first.

There are different techniques in the acupuncture process. And depending on the technique employed, so will the length of the treatment vary Generally, a typical acupuncture treatment will last for around thirty minutes. The techniques of acupuncture includes: a.) moxibustion, b.) cupping, c.) electrostimulation and d.) laser acupuncture.

Admittedly, inserting needles into certain points in the body do hold some certain mystique that captivates many people. And as much as people would want sufficient scientific data to back up its efficacy, acupuncture seems to lure many into its mysterious appeal as a means towards better and improved health.

The openness of the Western minds today does play an important role in the acceptance of acupuncture as a worthy alternative of treating ailments and illnesses. Many have now recognized the need for a holistic approach in treating diseases and one's condition. With an open mind, one can see the benefits the other alternative approaches can offer.

Conventional and alternative medicine need not be two opposing forces. One may however look at these as different but complementary weapons against bad health. The two can be made use of - to get the best of both worlds. One can reap the benefits of these two approaches and it all starts with an open mind.

It has been for so long a time that most have trusted mainly the conventional medicines that doctors prescribe to patients.

And it is not without reason and logic that many entrust their health and well-being to doctors whose practice, background and medicines have been tested over longer periods of time. Holistic medicine on the other hand is not without a strong following also. With elders and culture playing a major part in the acceptance of such alternative approaches in medicine one cannot dismiss the believers or so-called converts of alternative medicine. One can even start to doubt his pessimism on his current beliefs and biases of alternative medicine.

As experienced by many who have tried holistic medicine, the approach is found practical and effective. And for people and patients who may not have the budget for costly fees of professional doctors, their services and medicines many now look the other way for an option. And with holistic medicine gaining more popularity day by day, this becomes a worthwhile approach for many. It even becomes the hope of patients who may have given up on conventional medicines either for reasons of cost or for reasons of efficacy.

Some who still aren't that convinced yet with holistic medicine will usually try it out in complement with conventional medicines. In this case, it is called complementary medicine. And little by little, they turn to the alternative approach once they are convinced that it has been effective on their end and once they are confident that such is worth it.

Holistic medicine takes into account all the aspects of the person his physical, mental, emotional, social and spiritual dimensions. The approach involves taking into consideration each important aspect and addressing the persons needs & issues for each. It relies first on the body's ability to heal itself naturally before going into even deeper and stronger approaches.

This alternative approach however does not make itself blind that some situations will really need surgery, conventional medical procedures and prescription drugs. Holistic medicine recognizes that on appropriate occasions and instances such conventional approaches have their advantages. What the holistic medicine approach is trying to say however, is that natural methods should be the first option.

Since alternative medicine is not widely accepted by conventional medical practitioners, many will always have second thoughts in relying solely on this alternative approach in one's quest towards optimum wellness. In fact, there has been a study that showed that 83% of those who went for alternative medicine consultations have also gone to conventional medical practitioners for the same purpose. This just goes to show the existing mindset people have about these available options they have in getting a cure for their illnesses.

If one is open-minded about this, he may just reap the benefits that many have claimed by trying out holistic medicine for their health concerns. With acupuncture, yoga, massage therapy, meditation, acupressure, homeopathy and traditional Chinese medicines to name a few are approaches under the Holistic Medicine system. Each is considered to be a powerful approach by itself that when taken as a system will provide optimum results for one's health.

The theories behind each approach of the alternative options mentioned previously, cover a large base.

Acupuncture for instance which was originated by the Chinese over 5,000 years ago - has become quite popular even in the US. It considers the meridians or the body's energy lines and with the inserted needle on a point along these lines, will help with the circulation and with the restoration of the balance of the energy flow. Each meridian has an associated organ system and by addressing that specific energy line of concern, your specific illness will be targeted.

Then another would be the use of traditional Chinese medicines or herbs which are believed to be used for many generations, and considered to be potent as a cure for specific illnesses. Such are biologically-based therapies that make use of substances found in nature as a cure for various illnesses.

Holistic medicine, while having its own limitations has its own advantages. And perhaps what has worked well for many, is taking this in tandem with conventional medicines. And while doing so, always ask your doctor on how best to approach this so as not to put your health to further danger and risk. Holistic medicine does hold wonders which are yours for the taking.
